Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Senecio

Characteristics

Perennial herb, crown fibrous from old leaf bases, flowering stem solitary, up to 55 cm tall, simple below, branching above into the compound inflorescence, striate, thinly greyish-white woolly-cobwebby, glabrescent, some hairs clinging in wisps, closely leafy. Radical leaves erect, up to 300 x 7 mm, half of this petiole-like, blade linear-lanceolate, apex acuminate, base tapered then broadened again into the flat petiolar part as broad as the blade, margins thickened, revolute, remotely callose-toothed, upper surface glabrous or with a few cobwebby hairs, lower surface thinly white-felted, midrib glabrous; cauline leaves similar but upper ones sessile, diminishing in size and passing into linear-acuminate inflorescence bracts. Heads discoid, 2-12 on long (5-20 cm) nearly nude peduncles corymbosely arranged. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 20, 9-12 mm long, slightly shorter than the flowers, thinly woolly-cobwebby; calyculus bracts few, about half the length of the involucre. Flowers c. 70, clear dull yellow, median resinous lines running back down the corolla lobes and inflated part of the tube. Achenes 6 mm long, fusiform-cylindric with 10 broad glabrous ribs, thickly white-setose in the channels.
