Characteristics

Perennial herb with a thick, creeping stock, sometimes branched, white silky-woolly at the crown, flowering stem terminal, solitary; c. 10-45 cm tall, mostly simple, remotely bracteate, glabrous except for tufts of wool in the bract axils. Leaves all radical, rosetted, thick-textured, up to 9 x 2.25 cm, spathulate, obtuse, base broad, clasping, margins thickened, often reddish, entire or obscurely denticulate or serrulate, silky-woolly at the base, otherwise glabrous. Heads radiate, often solitary, occasionally up to 4 corymbosely arranged on long bracteate peduncles. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 20, 8-9 mm long, about equalling the disc, glabrous, nerves resinous, calyculus ample, descending on the peduncle and white-woolly there. Rays c. 20, long, spreading, they and the disc bright yellow. Achenes not seen, ovaries glabrous.
