Characteristics

Stout herb (possibly biennial) up to 1 m tall, stem simple below the inflorescence, cobwebby, usually glabrescent, leafy throughout. Radical leaves up to 60 cm long, about half of this petiolar, blade up to 7 cm broad, elliptic, gradually narrowed to the petiole, cauline leaves smaller, gradually passing into bracts, sessile, decurrent on the stem in broad, nearly entire to coarsely toothed wings, leaf base and wings often markedly undulate, apex acute, margins callose denticulate, upper surface glabrescent, lower often persistently cobwebby. Heads radiate, few to many corymbosely arranged. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 20, (8-)10-12 mm long, about equalling the disc, calyculus of c. 2 series of long, lanceolate bracts, usually lightly cobwebby, margins sometimes minutely glandular. Rays c. 8, limb 10-20 mm long, both rays and disc bright yellow. Achenes c. 6 mm long, cylindric, ribbed, glabrous or sparsely hispidulous between the ribs.
