Characteristics

Perennial herb, flowering stem up to c. 1 m tall, solitary, simple, leafy in the lower part, bracteate above, stem, leaves and involucre thinly white woolly-cobwebby, wool persisting in wisps mainly in the leaf axils and on the involucre. Leaves up to c. 40 x 4 cm, variable in shape, lanceolate to broadly elliptic, apex acute to acuminate, base tapering to a petiole up to half the total leaf length, the upper leaves and bracts becoming sessile, broad-based, half-clasping, leathery, margins thickened, obscurely to markedly callose-denticulate. Beads discoid, c. 12 x 15 mm, few to many on long peduncles corymbosely or racemosely arranged. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 20, c. 9 mm long, shorter than the disc flowers, double-keeled, resinous, lightly calycled, the bracts not descending on the peduncle. Flowers dull deep violet. Achenes c. 5-6 mm long, cylindric, closely ribbed, glabrous.
