Characteristics

Perennial herb to 2 m high, subscapigerous; stems paired, erect, furrowed, greyish-green, arachnoid.. Basal leaves sessile, elliptic, 27–32 cm long (including 7.5–11.5 cm long petioloid base), 2.5–6 cm wide, attenuate into a petioloid base, sinuate-dentate, acute, coriaceous, green and glabrous above, greyish-green and arachnoid beneath, the petioloid base thinly arachnoid; stem leaves smaller and becoming progressively smaller up the stem, sessile, linear-lanceolate, auriculate, ± entire, 5.5–11 cm long, 0.7–1 cm wide.. Capitula discoid, erect, 4–5 in a lax terminal corymb; stalks of the individual capitula arachnoid; involucre globose, arachnoid, ± 10 mm long, 10 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus ± 12–14, broadly lanceolate, arachnoid, apically bearded, 8 mm long; phyllaries ± 26–28, arachnoid, greyish-green tipped reddish, apically long-attenuate and glabrous except at bearded tip.. Ray florets 0; disc-florets, styles and anthers orange-yellow, corolla 7.5 mm long, tube gradually expanded upwards, glabrous, lobes 0.5 mm long.. Mature achenes unknown, but ovary of disc florets ± 1.5 mm long, glabrous; pappus 6 mm long.
