Erect or decumbent perennial herb 30–60 cm high, rosette-forming, subscapigerous; stems reddish-brown, glandular or sparsely so.. Basal leaves sessile, oblanceolate, broadly oblanceolate or oblanceolate-elliptic in outline, 7–21 cm long, 0.9–7 cm wide, attenuate into a petioloid base, margins often reddish, sinuate-serrate to sinuate-dentate, bidentate-lobate or pinnately lobed with rounded, denticulate lobes, apex rounded to obtuse, apiculate, glandular above and on margins and especially or at least on mid-rib beneath; stem leaves few, sessile, oblong or oblanceolate-oblong, 4–5 x 0.6–1 cm, semi-amplexicaul, sinuate-denticulate.. Capitula discoid, 3–many in a lax terminal corymb; inflorescence axes glandular; involucre cylindrical, 8–12 mm long, 4–6 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 2–4, narrow, lanceolate, 1.5–4 mm long, glandular; phyllaries 12–21, dark green with purplish tips, 7.5–10.5 mm long, glandular.. Ray florets 0; disc florets purple, mauve or rarely yellow, corolla 5.5–8.8 mm long, tube campanulate in upper third, glabrous, lobes 1–1.2 mm long..
