Characteristics

Perennial herb to 1.5 m high; stems solitary, erect, pale green with darker green striations, sometimes reddish-purple below, slightly glandular-pubescent in upper part.. Basal leaves sessile, ovate to broadly elliptic, 12–51 cm long (including 11.5–19 cm long petioloid base), 5.5–13.5 cm wide, attenuate into a very sparsely pubescent petioloid base, margins strongly dentate, apex obtuse or obtuse and shortly acuminate; stem leaves sessile, broadly ovate, lanceolate or elliptic, 7–32 cm long, 1.4–8.5 cm wide, cuneate into a petioloid base, the upper leaves with broadly winged, ± auriculate base, margins sinuate-dentate, apex obtuse; all leaves deep green and glabrous above, pale with prominent veins and glabrous except for a few arachnoid hairs on mid-rib beneath.. Capitula discoid, erect, numerous in a copious but lax terminal corymb; stalks of the individual capitula slender, glandular-pubescent or setose; involucre cylindrical, 6–7 mm long, 4 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 4–6, lanceolate, 2.5–6 mm long, slightly ciliate; phyllaries 12–14, pale yellowish green, 5–7 mm long, almost glabrous, long-attenuate, bearded at the apex.. Ray florets 0; disc florets and styles pale greenish yellow, anthers pale greenish yellow to sulphur, turning brown, corolla 6.3–7 mm long, tube glabrous, gradually expanded above the middle, lobes 1.5 mm long.. Achenes (immature) 3 mm long, glabrous; pappus 6–7 mm long, white.
