Characteristics

Erect herbs to c. 0.8 m high, not leafier in lower 1/3 at anthesis. Roots not seen. Stems appressed-cobwebby. Leaves 6–8 cm long, with l:w ratio c. 8–12, usually undivided; base without auricles; margin ± entire; upper surface ± glabrous or sparsely appressed-cottony; lower surface densely woolly. Capitula several per stem; calycular bracteoles 6–10, 2–3 mm long; peduncle and calyculus not or sparsely cobwebby at anthesis; involucre 5–7 mm long, c. 2 mm diam.; bracts 12–14, recurved apically, glabrous. Florets 25–40, all bisexual, or possibly some female, with stamens reduced to staminodes. Achenes narrowly obloid, 2.5–3 mm long, dark brown, with papillose hairs in bands; l:w ratio of hairs c. 2–3. Pappus c. 6 mm long.
