A perennial herb up to c. 2 m tall, stems rather woody, glandular-pubescent, leafy, branching above into a large many-headed corymbose panicle. Leaves all cauline, up to c. 11(-20) x 5(-13) cm, elliptic or ovate-elliptic, all but the uppermost more or less abruptly contracted to a narrow, flat, winged petiole expanded at the base into 2 large rounded, toothed auricles, uppermost more or less panduriform or broad-based and clasping, margins coarsely and irregularly toothed in the upper part, sometimes more deeply lobed or coarsely toothed in the lower, occasionally lyrate-pinnatifid, callose-denticulate, both surfaces scabrid-pubescent, the lower often more densely so, the leaves drying slightly discolorous, penninerved, nerves raised below, pubescent. Heads discoid, turbinate, 7-8 x 5 mm, very many in cymose-corymbose clusters borne in a large open corymbose panicle.
