Characteristics

Perennial herb with a woody stock, glabrous except for the woolly crown and woolly hairs hidden in the leaf axils, flowering stems usually solitary, simple below the inflorescence branches, up to c. 60(-90) cm tall, leafy. Leaves 3-6(-8), passing abruptly into bracts, up to 14 x 4(-10) cm, at least the middle leaf (1-)2-4(-5) times as long as broad, lanceolate-elliptic, oblong-elliptic, ovate or suborbicular, apex obtuse, subacute or acute to acuminate, base more or less cordate-clasping, often very shortly decurrent, margins thickened, entire or remotely and obscurely callose-denticulate, often somewhat revolute, rarely more coarsely and sharply toothed, leaves drying rather leathery or rigid, main side nerves (those running out to the margin, then looping) (5-)7-12, lesser nerves not or scarcely visible or all gradations to a raised reticulate venation. Heads radiate or discoid, few to many on long sparsely bracteate peduncles corymbose-paniculately arranged. Involucre generally turbinate, bracts 6-8(-10), very rarely up to 12, (3.5-)4-5, very rarely 6, mm long, much shorter than the disc, broad, flat, calyculus bracts 1 or 2, very small, or wanting. Rays often 5, sometimes fewer or wanting, very rarely 8, they and the disc bright yellow. Achenes 3-4 mm long, ribbed, glabrous.
