Characteristics

Perennial herb with a woody tuber c. 1 cm diam., stems one or few from the crown, slightly decumbent at the base or erect, up to 45 cm long, branching low down into a few-to several-headed corymbose panicle, lower part densely leafy, upper pedunculoid, glandular-pubescent. Leaves all cauline, the lower ones with petioles up to 35 mm long, blade up to 9 x 5.5 cm, elliptic or ovate, abruptly or more gradually narrowed to the petiole, apex subacute or obtuse, margins sinuately-lobed or toothed, often lobulate in the lower part, both surfaces densely glandular-pubescent, clammy when fresh and honey-scented, upper leaves smaller, lanceolate or elliptic, sessile, inflorescence bracts few, very small. Heads discoid, turbinate, 15-25 mm long and as much across the flattened pappus. Involucral bracts c. 16-20, 9-11 mm long, pilose, some of the hairs tipped with a clavate gland, calyculus bracts very few, small. Flowers purple. Achenes cylindric, ribbed, hispid between the ribs. Pappus very copious, fine and silky, exserted well beyond the involucre of the fruiting head.
