Characteristics

A rather harshly glandular-pubescent perennial herb with 1-4 erect flowering stems from the crown, up to c. 60 cm tall, simple below, branching above into a corymbose panicle. Leaves mostly radical, crowded, up to c. 15 x 1-2 cm, narrowly elliptic, tapering into a flat, narrowly winged, petiole-like base, margins coarsely and irregularly toothed, the larger teeth and the sinuses often denticulate, stem leaves similar, but smaller, sessile, confined to the lower half of the stems. Heads discoid, campanulate, c. 10 x 8 mm across the top of the flattened pappus, few to many in corymbose panicles. Involucral bracts c. 12-14, c. 6.5-10 mm long, clothed in short, stiff gland-tipped hairs, calyculus bracts 2 or 3, short. Flowers purple or dull yellow. Achenes cylindric, ribbed, hispid between the ribs.
