Perennial herb; flowering stems up to 0.6 m high, 1-4, erect, simple below, branching into inflorescences; harshly glandular-pubescent. Leaves: mostly in a basal rosette; blade narrowly elliptic, up to ± 150 x 20 mm, tapering to flat, narrowly winged, petiole-like base, margins coarsely and irregularly toothed, larger teeth and sinuses often denticulate; stem leaves similar, smaller, sessile, confined to lower half of stem; with short, stiff, harsh, glandular hairs. Heads discoid, ± 10 x 8 mm, few to many in corymbose panicles. Involucral bracts 12-14, 6.5-10.0 mm long, gland-tipped hairy; calyculus bracts 2 or 3, short. Flowers: disc florets only, purple or dull yellow; Nov. Fruit with cypsela (and ovary) hispid between ribs.
