Characteristics

Perennial herb, 40–150 cm high; stems erect, with white arachnoid tomentum, glabrescent, reddish-brown.. Basal leaves sessile, elliptic, 31–60 cm long (including 10–22 cm long petioloid base), 7–17 cm wide, attenuate into a membraneous petioloid base, margins closely to coarsely dentate or bidentate, apex obtuse; stem leaves sessile, elliptic to lanceolate, 4.5–32 cm long, 0.5–10.5 cm wide, attenuate into an exauriculate or scarcely auriculate petioloid base in lower leaves, expanded and semi-amplexicaul in upper leaves, margins strongly dentate or bidentate, obtuse, shortly acuminate; all leaves arachnoid-pubescent and ± glabrescent.. Capitula discoid, erect, numerous in congested terminal corymbs; involucre cylindrical, 7–9 mm long, 5.5–6.5 mm in diameter, arachnoid at least at the base; bracts of calyculus 8–10, lanceolate, 3–8 mm long, ± arachnoid; phyllaries 16–18, 7–8 mm long, arachnoid or thinly so, long-tapered and bearded at the apex.. Ray florets 0; disc florets yellow to orange or brownish, corolla 4.5–7 mm long, tube gradually expanded above the middle, glabrous, lobes 0.7–1 mm long.. Achenes (immature) 4 mm long, glabrous; pappus 4.5–7 mm long, white.
