Characteristics

Perennial herb c. 10-35 cm tall, roots very narrowly fusiform, crown of stock fibrous from old leaf bases, flowering stems simple, sparsely leafy, grey-cottony, glabrescent, solitary from each leaf tuft, several tufts usually crowded on the crown. Leaves mostly radical, c. 5-20 x 0.1-0.2 cm, linear, apex obtuse, base abruptly broadened, sheathing, with long silky-woolly hairs, but often hidden by old fibres, margins strongly revolute, both surfaces enveloped in a grey, closely-felted, silky-woolly indumentum, glabrescent or partly so, cauline leaves similar but base not expanded, few, distant, soon passing into bracts. Heads radiate, often solitary but up to 3 corymbosely arranged on long peduncles. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 14-20, 7-9 mm long, about equalling the disc, calyculus bracts few, all loosely and thinly woolly. Rays 8-13, they and the disc bright yellow. Achenes not seen, ovaries villous.

Leaves: radical leaves linear, up to 200 mm long, both sides with grey, closely felted, silky woolly indumentum, ± glabrescent; cauline leaves ± similar, fewer, becoming bracts. Inflorescence a 1-3-headed corymb; peduncles long. Capitula radiate, disc and rays (8-13) bright yellow; involucre campanulate, thinly woolly; bracts 14-20, 7-9 mm long; calyculus bracts few. Flowering time Nov.-Jan. Cypselae ± 1.5 mm long, cylindrical, ribbed, ± hairy.
Tufted, thinly white-woolly perennial to 25 cm. Leaves linear, margins revolute, accumulating in a fibrous base. Flower heads radiate, solitary or few in lax corymbs on elongate, sparsely leafy peduncles, yellow.
