Characteristics

Perennial herb, up to 1 m high; branching from base, woody, glabrous or very sparsely hairy, leafy, often with axillary leaf tufts. Leaves: blade linear, up to 100 x 10 mm, apex acute, base half-clasping, often hastately eared, lower leaves sometimes narrowed to petiole-like base, margins ± revolute, denticulate, sometimes more coarsely toothed or pinnately lobed; glabrous. Heads radiate, few to many in open, corymbose panicles. Involucral bracts ± 20, (5-)6-7(-9) mm long, slightly shorter than or equalling disc florets; calyculus bracts ample, in 3 or 4 series, bracts overlapping, innermost ± 1/3-1/2 as long as involucre. Flowers: ray florets ± (7-)13; ray and disc florets canary-yellow; Oct.-Apr. Fruit with cypsela (and ovary) hispid between ribs.

Heads radiate, rays ± 13, involucral bracts ± 20, (5-)6-7(-9) mm long, calyculus bracts in 3 or 4 series, bracts overlapping, innermost ± a third to half as long as involucre. Achenes hispid between ribs. Flowers canary-yellow; September to January and April to May.
Similar to S. inaequidens in habit and foliage, but differing in its larger heads (involucral bracts (5-)6-7(-9) mm long) and ample calyculus of 3-4 series of mostly dark-tipped, overlapping bracts, the innermost about one third to half as long as the involucre.
Similar to S. inaequidens DC. (above) except: Involucral bracts 5-9 mm long. Calyculus bracts in 3 or 4 series, mostly dark-tipped, overlapping, innermost ± 1/3-1/2 as long as involucre. Flowering time Feb.-May.
