Characteristics

Perennial herb with a stout woody stock usually crowned with coarse, fibrous leaf bases, flowering stem up to 1 m tall, simple below the inflorescence, leafy mainly in the lower part, distant reduced leaves or bracts in the upper, glabrous. Radical leaves up to 30 x 9 cm, but often only half that, blade mostly broadly elliptic tapering to a broad, petiole-like clasping base that accounts for approx. half the leaf length, apex acute to somewhat obtuse, margins more or less entire to callose denticulate, texture slightly fleshy, stem leaves elliptic to lanceolate, base cordate-clasping, sometimes slightly decurrent, glabrous. Heads radiate, 3-9 on long peduncles corymbosely arranged. Involucre broadly campanulate, bracts c. 20, 8-13 mm long, about equalling the disc, strongly keeled, sometimes sparsely glandular, calyculus bracts few or several, shorter than the involucre, margins often with stalked, glands. Rays c. 13-15, long, spreading, they and the disc bright yellow. Ovaries with long spreading hairs, sometimes sparse. Achenes not seen.
