Characteristics

Perennial herb with a woody stock up to 1 cm in diam., crowned with a leaf rosette, flowering stems several, lateral to the rosette, decumbent then erect, hollow, up to 6 mm diam., 70 cm long, simple below, forking above into the compound inflorescence, more or less remotely leafy, stems, leaves and involucral bracts nearly glabrous to thinly glandular-pubescent. Radical leaves up to 35 x 5 cm, oblanceolate, narrowed to a broad flat petiole-like clasping base, apex obtuse, margins shallowly lobed or deeply toothed, the lobes denticulate, or in small leaves sometimes sinuate-denticulate, cauline leaves oblanceolate or oblong becoming lanceolate upwards and passing into bracts, base broad, clasping, margins variously toothed. Heads radiate, few on sparsely bracteate peduncles arranged in a loose corymbose panicle. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 12, (11-)12-14 mm long, about equalling the disc, calyculus bracts few. Rays 8-12, long and spreading, median line in corolla lobes of disc flowers running back down the inflated part of the tube, all flowers yellow. Achenes 4-5 mm long, cylindric, closely ribbed, white-hispid between the ribs.
