Perennial herb up to 1.8 m tall, rootstock stout, woody, crowned with old fibrous leaf bases, flowering stem solitary, simple below the inflorescence, often lightly cobwebby at first, glabrescent, sometimes minutely puberulous, leafy. Radical leaves up to c. 60 x 5 cm, elliptic, acute to acuminate, tapering to a petiolar part accounting for roughly half the total length, base expanded, clasping, margins callose-crenulate or denticulate, sometimes irregularly callose-serrate, often glabrous at maturity, sometimes with traces of cobwebby wool, or minutely puberulous below, membranous or slightly coriaceous; cauline leaves similar but soon sessile, base broad, often somewhat auricled, often more or less decurrent, occasionally the stem wings broad and conspicuous, wings entire or callose-toothed. Heads radiate, many in a flat-topped corymbose panicle, peduncles usually scaly. Involucre turbinate-campanulate, bracts c. 10-12, (4-)4.5-5.5(-7) mm long, shorter than the disc, calyculus bracts few, much shorter than the involucre. Rays 5, relatively short, soon reflexed, they and the disc bright yellow, corolla lobes with a weakly developed median line. Achenes c. 4 mm long, fusiform, ribbed, glabrous.
Glabrous perennial herb up to c. 1 m tall, several slender rhizomes radiating from base of flowering stem producing new rosettes terminally, flowering stem simple below the inflorescence, leafy. Leaves up to c. 30 x 4.5 cm, decreasing in size upwards and passing into inflorescence bracts, elliptic to lanceolate, apex gradually acuminate, lowermost gradually attenuated to a flat, petiole-like base, upper more broad-based, all or the lower ones often decurrent on the stem in broad or narrow wings, margins closely and minutely callose crenulate or denticulate, blade finely reticulate. Heads radiate, up to c. 50 in a corymbose panicle, peduncles long, scaly. Involucre, turbinate-campanulate, bracts c. 12-16, (5,5-)6-7 mm long, shorter than the disc, calyculus ample, inner bracts about half as long as the involucre, all bracts dark-tipped. Rays 8(-11), long, spreading, they and the disc bright yellow. Achenes c. 3 mm long, fusiform, ribbed, glabrous.
