Characteristics

Somewhat glaucous perennial herb with a stout woody stock, glabrous except for the woolly crown and woolly hairs hidden in the leaf axils, flowering stem up to 1.5 m tall, solitary, simple below the inflorescence branches, leafy in the lower part, nearly nude above. Lower leaves up to 20 x 6.5 cm, oblong-obovate, contracted into a broad flat winged petiole, expanded below and half-clasping, apex more or less obtuse, margins thickened, obscurely or distinctly denticulate or serrulate, side nerves sharply ascending, upper leaves similar but soon sessile, broad-based, stem-clasping, often shortly decurrent, becoming oblong or lanceolate, acute to acuminate, few, distant, passing into small inflorescence bracts. Heads discoid, many in rather congested corymbose clusters arranged in a large corymbose panicle. Involucre narrowly cylindric, bracts 4-5, (5-)7 mm long, reaching only to the base of the expanded part of the corollas, flat, leathery, nerves resinous, calyculus bracts 0-2, very small, with a few bracts on the peduncles. Flowers bright yellow. Achenes c. 4.5 mm long, ribbed, glabrous.
