Characteristics

Erect or creeping herb with annual shoots up to 40 cm high or long from a thickened undergound part; stems in the upper part reddish purple and sparsely pilose with multicellular hairs, otherwise glabrous.. Leaves narrowly obovate to almost linear, 1.5–4.5 cm long, 0.2–1.6 cm wide, base attenuate, margins entire or denticulate but slightly thickened and minutely revolute, apex obtuse and somewhat thickened, sparsely pilose-scabridulous on both surfaces, glabrescent (no basal leaves or root crown visible or indicated).. Capitula solitary, erect, discoid; involucre cylindrical, dark purple-red, 8–12 mm long, 6–9 mm in diameter, densely pilose-scabridulous at base; bracts of calyculus 5–10, narrowly lanceolate and up to 5 mm long, acute, pilose; phyllaries 15–20, attenuate, sparsely pilose-scabridulous, penicillate-bearded at apex.. Ray florets absent; disc florets orange-yellow or yellow, corolla 8.5–10.2 mm long, tube slightly and gradually widening in the upper half, lobes 1.5–2.5 mm long; anthers 3 mm long; style arms obtuse, papillate at apex.. Achenes ± 3 mm long, 8–9-ribbed, pilose between the ribs; pappus 7.5–8.5 mm long, white.
