Characteristics

Erect or sprawling herbs to 1 m high, not leafier in lower 1/3 at anthesis. Taproot well-developed; secondary roots fine. Stems glabrous. Leaves 8–20 cm long, with l:w ratio c. 2–3, undivided or lobate with 3–7 triangular lobes per side; base becoming slightly auriculate; margin with frequent acuminate teeth; both surfaces ± glabrous. Capitula numerous per stem; calycular bracteoles 3–6, 1–2 mm long; peduncle and calyculus not cobwebby at anthesis; involucre 4–5 mm long, 1.8–2 mm diam.; bracts 12–14, glabrous. Florets 30–40. Achenes narrowly obloid, 1.8–2.2 mm long, dark brown, with papillose hairs in bands or somewhat scattered; l:w ratio of hairs c. 3. Pappus 3–4 mm long.
