Characteristics

A stout perennial or possibly biennial herb up to 2.4 m tall, stems solitary, simple below the inflorescence branches, glabrous or cobwebby, closely leafy. Leaves up to 14 x 4 cm, decreasing in size upwards and passing into inflorescence bracts, oblong, oblong-lanceolate or somewhat spathulate, the uppermost ovate to lanceolate, apex obtuse to acute, the uppermost leaves and the bracts acuminate, base broad, often cordate-clasping, margins thickened, nearly entire, denticulate, serrulate or more coarsely and irregularly toothed, white-cobwebby or glabrous. Heads many in congested clusters arranged in sometimes large corymbose panicles. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 14-20, c. 4.5-5 mm long, nearly equalling the disc, glabrous, nerves resinous, calyculus bracts few but the whole peduncle bracteate, these bracts glabrous or loosely white-woolly. Rays 8, short and spreading, they and the disc bright yellow, corolla lobes of disc flowers with a median resinous line. Achenes 1.5 mm long, cylindric, ribbed, glabrous or minutely puberulous between the ribs.

Capitula many, radiate, disc and rays bright yellow, rays 8, short, spreading; involucre campanulate; bracts 14-20, 4.5-5.0 mm long, glabrous; calyculus bracts few, along whole peduncle. Flowering time Sept.-May. Cypselae cylindrical, 1.5 mm long, ribbed, ± glabrous.
