Characteristics

Perennial herb with a stout woody stock, glabrous except for the woolly crown and woolly hairs hidden in the leaf axils, flowering stems up to 1 m tall, solitary or occasionally 2 from a crown, usually simple below the inflorescence branches, occasionally with one branch near ground level, leafy throughout. Leaves up to 9(-14) x 4(-8) cm, decreasing only slightly in size upwards, oblong, oblong-elliptic, oblong-ovate, occasionally obovate, the uppermost sometimes lanceolate-acuminate, main inflorescence branches of vigorous specimens often with leaves only slightly smaller than the cauline, only the partial corymbs with lanceolate, very acute to acuminate bracts, apices otherwise subacute to acute, base often more or less cordate, half-clasping, sometimes slightly decurrent, margins thickened, distantly callose-denticulate, sometimes obscurely so, occasionally entire, leathery, main side nerves c. 5-10, sharply ascending, subsidiary nerves seldom clearly visible. Heads radiate, many on sparsely bracteate peduncles arranged in sometimes very large, well-branched corymbose panicles. Involucre turbinate, bracts 7-8, (4-)5.5-6(-7) mm long, much shorter than the disc, broad, flat, nerves resinous, calyculus wanting or 1 or 2 very small bracts. Rays usually 5, sometimes 1-4, they and the disc bright yellow. Achenes 4-5 mm long, ribbed, glabrous.
