Perennial herb with a stout woody stock c. 1.5 cm in diam., flowering stems several from the crown, often decumbent then erect, up to c. 60 cm long, softly glandular-pilose, mostly simple, sparsely to closely leafy. Leaves mostly radical, rosetted, up to c. 15 x 3 cm, oblong to spathulate, tapering to a broad flat base but scarcely petioled, apex subacute to obtuse, margins entire, sinuate or sometimes shallowly toothed or denticulate, shortly glandular-pubescent, sometimes lightly cobwebbed below at first, cauline leaves smaller, passing into inflorescence bracts, base sub-auricled, clasping. Heads radiate, c. 12-15 x 15-20 mm across the top of the flattened pappus, few to many, more or less racemosely arranged. Involucral bracts 16-20, (10-)12(-15) mm long, more or less villous to pilose with long jointed gland-tipped hairs, which are also on the inflorescence branches, calyculus bracts c. 3-5, short. Rays 12-13(-18), they and the disc deep pink to purple. Achenes cylindric with long white hairs.
