Characteristics

A slender voluble herbaceous twiner, stems and leaves somewhat succulent, all parts glabrous. Leaves up to 6 x 8 cm, deltoid-ovate in outline with 3-5 acute lobes on either side, margins of lobes straight or slightly concave, base more or less cordate, petiole about as long as the blade or a little longer. Heads radiate or very rarely discoid, sometimes solitary, usually up to c. 12 in open corymbs terminating short leafy side branches. Involucre turbinate, bracts c. 12, 10-13 mm long, calyculus bracts about half the length of the involucre, spreading or reflexed, margins generally thinly ciliate. Rays c. 8, very conspicuous, they and the disc yellow. Achenes 4.5-5.5 mm long, cylindric, ribbed, glabrous.

Perennial, herbaceous twiner, glabrous, ± fleshy. Stems up to 1.8 m long. Leaves up to 60 x 80 mm, outline deltoid-ovate, 3-5 acute lobes either side, base ± cordate; petioles up to 60 mm long. Inflorescence a solitary capitula or up to 12 in terminal corymbs. Capitula radiate, disc and rays (± 8) yellow, rays conspicuous; involucre turbinate; bracts ± 12, 10-13 mm long; calyculus bracts ± 6 mm long, spreading or reflexed, margins thinly ciliate. Flowering time mainly May, June. Cypselae cylindrical, ± 5 mm long, ribbed, glabrous.
