Characteristics

Annual or perennial herb 5–60 cm high; stems branched, decumbent or ascending, then erect, arachnoid-pubescent to glabrous except at the nodes, sometimes purple-tinged.. Stem leaves sessile, linear to elliptic, lanceolate or narrowly ovate in outline, entire to strongly pinnately toothed or lobed, pinnatifid into narrow triangular-ascending acute lobes, or deeply pinnately divided into remote narrowly oblong segments, 1–8 (including petioloid base when present) cm long, 0.1–1.3(–3 across the lobes) cm wide, base exauriculate or slightly auriculate or the lower narrowed into a basally expanded but exauriculate petioloid base; all leaves sparsely arachnoid-pubescent above and often more densely so beneath, or glabrous.. Capitula radiate or less often discoid, erect, 1–5 in small lax corymbs terminal on the branches, when numerous forming as a whole a lax terminal compound corymb; stalks of the individual capitula slender, sparsely arachnoid-pubescent, especially at the apex, or glabrous; involucre cylindrical or broadly so, 3.5–5.5 mm long, 2–6 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 1–9, lanceolate or broadly so, sometimes remote, 1.2–2 mm long, thinly arachnoid or glabrous; phyllaries 11–16, 3–5 mm long, thinly arachnoid or glabrous, shortly tapered to bearded apex.. Ray florets 7–14 or sometimes 0, bright yellow, tube 2–2.5 mm long, glandular-hairy, rays 3.5–6 x 1.5–2.2 mm, 4–5-veined; disc florets yellow or orange-yellow, corolla 3–4.5 mm long, tube expanded above the middle, glabrous or with a few glandular hairs in lower part, lobes 0.3–0.5 mm long.. Achenes 1.7–3 mm long, ribbed, shortly hairy; pappus 3–4 mm long, white.. Fig. 135 (page 650).
