Characteristics

Glabrous perennial herb, rootstock woody, creeping, stems several from the base, stiffly erect to c. 1.2 m, usually simple below the inflorescence branches, woody (c. 4 mm diam.) and soon leafless below, leafy above. Leaves coriaceous, up to 7 x 2.5 cm, lyrate-pinnatifid, apical lobe very large, narrowly to broadly elliptic, tapering at both ends, triplinerved, sometimes black-punctate below, margins thickened, sharply serrulate, the teeth sometimes rather coarse; lower lobes 2-4 each side of the petiole-like base, linear or lanceolate, very acute, margins entire or few-toothed. Heads radiate, many on short sparingly bracteate peduncles arranged in a spreading corymbose panicle. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 8, 3.5-4 mm long, shorter than the disc, keeled, with 2-3 resinous nerves, glabrous, calyculus bracts few. Rays 5(-7), short, soon recurved, corolla lobes of disc flowers with a median orange resinous line descending on the inflated part of the tube, rays and disc yellow. Achenes 2 mm long, cylindric, 5-ribbed, glabrous.
