Characteristics

Perennial herb up to c. 60 cm tall, stock stout (c. 1 cm diam.) woody, crowned with one or several leaf rosettes, flowering stems usually several from the crown, lateral to the rosettes, simple below the inflorescences, thinly pilose with long white jointed hairs, leafy. Radical leaves up to 25 x 4 cm, oblanceolate, apex obtuse, tapering to a flat, petiole-like base accounting for half the leaf length, expanded and half-clasping below, coriaceous, margins irregularly callose-serrate or serrulate, often doubly so, occasionally lobulate, both surfaces usually glabrous or very nearly so except for long white hairs on the midrib particularly below, rarely leaf blade pubescent; cauline leaves similar but smaller, becoming lanceolate-acute upwards, soon sessile, base half-clasping. Heads discoid, up to c. 10 on long nearly nude peduncles corymbose-paniculately arranged. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 16-20, 9-12 mm long, a little shorter than the disc, calyculus sparse, all with a few long jointed hairs on the back. Flowers yellow, corolla lobes each with a median resinous line running back down the inflated part of the tube. Achenes c. 4 mm long, cylindric, closely ribbed, hispid between the ribs.
