Rhizomatous herbaceous perennial up to c. 75 cm tall, stem solitary, erect, simple below the inflorescence, hollow, up to 1 cm diam. near the base, rather harshly glandular-pilose to nearly glabrous, leafy mainly in the lower part. Leaves up to 20 x 9 cm, lyrate-pinnatisect, lobes up to c. 5 each side, apical lobe triangular in outline, sinuately lobed, lateral lobes roughly oblong, the upper margins of the larger ones shallowly lobed, all margins coarsely, irregularly and sharply toothed, lowermost tapering below to a broad, flat, remotely toothed, half-clasping petiole-like base, upper broad-based, auriculate, toothed, half-clasping, reduced and distant upwards, linear-lanceolate in outline, acuminate, all rather harshly glandular-pubescent on both surfaces. Heads radiate, many in congested clusters in a compact, rounded corymbose panicle. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 20, 9-12 mm long, equalling the disc, glandular-hispid, calyculus bracts few, long, glandular mainly on the margins. Rays 8, long, spreading, they and the disc bright yellow, corolla lobes with a faint median line. Achenes (immature) 5.5 mm long, cylindric, ribbed, glabrous.
