Characteristics

Shrubby, erect to c. 1 m, or somewhat spreading, stems and leaves more or less succulent, stems glabrous, closely leafy in the upper parts. Leaves very variable in shape, in Natal the blade mostly elliptic to ovate, up to 6 x 6 cm, apex acute, base more or less truncate to cuneate, margins crenate or serrate or more coarsely and irregularly toothed or lobed, rarely cut to the midrib, glabrous or sometimes pubescent, petiole 1-5 cm long, often with a pair of large, leaf-like lobes at the base, resembling stipules. Heads radiate, few to many in open corymbose panicles, the pedicels often scaly. Involucre turbinate, bracts c. 12, (3-)4.5(-5.5) mm long, keeled, with a median resinous nerve, calyculus bracts small, few. Rays 5-7, they and the disc canary yellow, corolla lobes of disc flowers each with a median resinous line. Achenes 2.5-3 mm long, cylindric, ribbed, glabrous or thinly hispid on the ribs.
