Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Senecio

Characteristics

Glabrous, sometimes glaucous, fleshy perennial herb, rootstock somewhat creeping, tuberous, tubers woody, elongated, up to 5 x 1 cm, flowering stems usually one, sometimes few, from the crown, up to 1 m tall, generally simple below the inflorescence branches, occasionally forking near the base, leafy near the base (though characteristically nude at the very base), nude above. Leaves fleshy, up to c. 9 x 9 cm but commonly only half that, variable in shape and toothing, orbicular and peltate to deltoid and peltate, or with varying degrees of development of a broad or narrow sinus, then either more or less peltate or the petiole arising at the base of the sinus, often with much variation on a single plant, margins rarely entire or nearly so, usually at least sinuate and distantly callose-denticulate, or often more coarsely, irregularly and sharply callose-dentate or sharply angled, petioles long (up to 15 cm), terete. Heads discoid, few to many on long nude peduncles corymbose-paniculately arranged. Involucre turbinate-campanulate, bracts 8(-10), (7-)8-10(-12) mm long, equalling the disc, broad, flat, leathery, with resinous lines, calyculus bracts few, very small. Flowers bright yellow. Achenes 3.5-4.5 mm long, cylindric, ribbed, generally hispid between the ribs, rarely glabrous.
