Characteristics

Perennial herb up to c. 75 cm tall, stock stout, woody, crowned with old fibrous leaf bases, flowering stems solitary, simple below the inflorescence branches, thinly woolly-cobwebby mostly in the lower part and in the leaf and bract axils, remotely leafy. Leaves mostly radical, up to c. 30 x 1(-1.5) cm, up to half the length petiolar, blade elliptic-lanceolate, apex acute, base narrowed to the petiolar portion, then expanded, clasping, margins closely and minutely callose-denticulate, blade glabrous, petiolar region thinly woolly-cobwebby, cauline leaves similar but broad-based and sessile, distant, soon passing into lanceolate-acuminate inflorescence bracts. Heads radiate or rarely discoid, up to c. 12 corymbose-paniculately arranged on long sparsely bracteate peduncles. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 14-22, 6-9 mm long, shorter than the disc, keeled, nerves resinous, calyculus bracts several, sometimes nearly equalling the involucre, nearly glabrous or with a few woolly hairs. Rays, when present, 8, they and the disc bright yellow, corolla lobes with a median line. Achenes c. 5 mm long, fusiform, ribbed, glabrous.
