Characteristics

Biennial (?) herb up to c. 2.4 m tall, stem simple below, branching above into the inflorescence, lower part woody, up to c. 1 cm diam., mostly leafless, cobwebby and leafy above. Leaves up to 22 x 11 cm, smaller upwards, panduriform, blade ovate, apex acute, base broad, sub-cordate or cuneate where it is abruptly contracted to the broadly winged petiole-like part, amply eared at the base, half-clasping, all margins thickened, dentate to denticulate, penninerved, upper surface cobwebby, glabresceht, lower cottony-cobwebby. Heads discoid, many in a very large, leafy, spreading corymbose panicle composed of many rather congested clusters. Involucre narrowly campanulate, bracts 8-10, c. 6 mm long, shorter than the disc, keeled, with 1-3 resinous nerves, calyculus ample, short, all bracts lightly cobwebby, hairs persisting particularly at the base of the involucre. Flowers yellow, each corolla lobe with a short median orange resinous line. Achenes 4 mm long, cylindric, ribbed, glabrous.
