Perennial herb up to 60 cm tall, whole plant glabrous except for wool at the lowermost nodes and hidden deep in the leaf axils, stems mostly solitary, occasionally paired, simple below the inflorescence branches, leafy near the base, nearly nude above. Leaves 4-5, crowded near the base of the stem, often a reduced leaf about midway on the otherwise nude upper part, and a small bract subtending each forking of the inflorescence, up to 6(-8) x 2 cm, lower ones elliptic, broadest at or above the middle, ratio of length to breadth c. 3-4:1, apex obtuse to subacute, base narrowed, sometimes into a short, broad, petiole-like part, upper leaves tapered more evenly at base and apex, apex acute, all margins slightly thickened, obscurely and remotely callose-denticulate, somewhat leathery when dry, faintly penninerved. Heads radiate, occasionally solitary, usually up to 12 on long nude or nearly nude peduncles arranged in a spreading corymbose panicle. Involucre turbinate-campanulate, bracts 8-10, 5-6 mm long, much shorter than the flowers, tips fimbriate, calyculus bracts 1 or 2, very small. Rays usually 5, disc flowers 17-21, all bright yellow. Ovaries 3 mm, glabrous. Achenes not seen.
