Characteristics

Branching herb up to 1.3 m tall, probably biennial, stems glandular-pubescent, leafy. Leaves up to c. 15 x 6.5 cm, sessile, lyrate or lyrate-pinnatifid, apical lobe triangular, acute, base conspicuously auricled, clasping, margins remotely callose-denticulate, membranous, both surfaces thinly hairy. Heads radiate or rarely discoid, c. 8 mm long, 20 mm across the spreading rays, few to many in an open corymbose panicle. Involucre turbinate-campanulate, bracts 12-14, 6-7 mm long, glandular-pubescent, calyculus bracts 2-3, very small. Ray flowers c. 8, purple or sometimes lilac or pure white, disc mauve, lilac or whitish. Achenes cylindric, ribbed, hispid between the ribs.
