Erect perennial herb or woody herb with numerous stems from woody base, 60–240 cm high; stems pale green, glandular-hairy.. Basal leaves sessile, oblong-elliptic or lyrate, 35–73 cm long, 9.7–12.5 cm wide, tapered into a petioloid base, margins pinnately lobed with large, oblanceolate, bidentate-lobulate terminal lobe and smaller ovate or broadly ovate dentate lateral lobes with rounded and apiculate apex; median and upper leaves sessile, lanceolate to broadly elliptic in outline, 5.5–17 cm long, 2.2–7 cm wide, auriculate at the base, pinnately lobed especially in lower part with ovate, denticulate lobes, obtuse to acute, acuminate-apiculate; all leaves sparsely shortly glandular-hairy to thinly arachnoid above, ± pubescent to arachnoid-tomentose beneath.. Capitula discoid, numerous in copious congested terminal and upper axillary corymbs; stalks of the individual capitula densely glandular; involucre 7–9 mm long, 3–3.5 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 4–9, lax, narrow, lanceolate, 2–4.5 mm long; phyllaries 10–13, green with purplish tips to entirely purple, 7–8.5 mm long, shortly glandular-hairy.. Ray florets absent; disc florets purple or mauve, rarely blue or white, corolla 5–7.2 mm long, glabrous, lobes 1–1.2 mm long.. Achenes (immature) 3.5–5 mm long, glabrous; pappus 5–7 mm long.

A perennial herb up to 1.5 m tall, stems thick, hollow, glandular-pubescent, leafy, branching above into a large, many-headed corymbose panicle. Radical and lower cauline leaves up to 45(-75) cm long including the petiole, 10(-15) cm broad, elliptic in outline, lyrate-pinnatifid, the lobes large, in turn lobed or repand, denticulate, sinuses broad, rounded, both surfaces glandular-pubescent, nerves reticulate below, upper leaves similar but smaller, broad-based and cordate-clasping. Heads discoid, turbinate, c. 8 x 6 mm, very many in congested cymose-corymbose clusters borne in a large open corymbose panicle. Involucral bracts c. 10-12, 6-7 mm long, glandular hispid, calyculus bracts very few. Flowers purple. Achenes cylindric, ribbed, glabrous or rarely minutely hispid between the ribs.
Perennial herb. Stems up to 1.5 m high, hollow, glandular-pubescent, leafy. Leaves up to 750 x 150 mm including petiole, elliptic, lyrate-pinnatifid, lobes large, lobed or repand, denticulate, sinuses broad, both surfaces glandular-pubescent, upper leaves smaller, broad-based and cordate-clasping. Inflorescence a large, corymbose panicle. Capitula many, discoid, purple; involucre turbinate; bracts ± 10-12, 6-7 mm long, glandular-hispid; calyculus bracts very few. Flowering time Oct.-Feb. Cypselae cylindrical, 2 mm long, ribbed, glabrous.
Like S. lanifer but heads crowded in compound corymbs and achenes glabrous and striate.
