Perennial herb 10-40 cm tall, rhizomatous, leaf tufts one or several at the crown, thin fibrous remains of old leaf bases often present, flowering stems solitary, thinly hairy, simple below the inflorescence, leafy in the lower part, bracteate upwards. Radical leaves up to 20 x 1.5 cm, about half the length petiolar, blade linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, apex subacute, tapering to a broad flat petiole-like base expanded below, half-clasping, margins thickened, often somewhat revolute and slightly undulate, nearly entire or callose-serrulate or crenulate, some of the teeth often larger, petiolar part thinly hairy, blade glabrous or nearly so; cauline leaves lanceolate, acute to acuminate, base somewhat cordate-clasping, margins as in the radical leaves, often with wisps of white cobwebby hairs in the axils and clinging to the teeth. Heads radiate, often solitary or up to 5 corymbosely arranged. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 20, (8-)9-11(-13) mm long, about equalling the disc, glabrous or nearly so, calyculus bracts several, lightly cobwebby-woolly. Rays (11-)13, long, spreading, they and the disc bright yellow. Ovary glabrous or thinly hairy. Achenes 5 mm long, fusiform, ribbed, minutely hispidulous or glabrous.
