Characteristics

Glabrous, sometimes glaucous, fleshy perennial herb, rootstock somewhat creeping, tuberous, tubers woody, elongated, up to 8 x 1.5 cm, flowering stems one or several from the crown, up to c. 1 m tall, stout (c. 1 cm diam. at base and becoming woody there), simple below the inflorescence branches or rarely forking near the base, densely leafy near the base (though characteristically nude at the very base), nude above. Leaves fleshy, up to 20 x 8 cm, rhomboid or obovate, apex subacute, mucronate, cuneate below, tapering to a broad, flat, petiole-like half-clasping base, margins distantly callose-denticulate in the upper part, sinuate-lobed or more sharply toothed as well. Heads discoid (but see note below), few to many on long nude peduncles corymbose-paniculately arranged. Involucre turbinate-campanulate, bracts 10-12, (8-)9.5-10 mm long, about equalling the disc, broad, flat, leathery, nerves resinous, calyculus bracts 1 or 2, very small. Flowers bright yellow. Achenes c. 5 mm long, cylindric, ribbed, hispid between the ribs.
