Characteristics

Perennial herb or shrubby herb, rhizomatous, 30–120(–200) cm high; stems stout, glabrous.. Basal leaves sessile, oblanceolate, 10–31 cm long (including 3.5–10.5 cm petioloid base), 2–7 cm wide, gradually attenuate into winged petioloid base, margins sinuate-dentate, apex obtuse to acute; stem leaves sessile, oblanceolate or lanceolate to ovate, 3.5–28 cm long, 1–5 cm wide, base ± expanded-auriculate and semi-amplexicaul at base, margins crenate-dentate to sinuate-dentate, obtuse to subacute; all leaves coriaceous, glabrous except sometimes for a few hairs on margins and mid-rib beneath.. Capitula radiate, erect, numerous in copious terminal corymbs; stalks of the individual capitula glabrous or almost so; involucre cylindrical, 9–10 mm long, 5–7 mm in diameter, glabrous or with a few hairs at the base; bracts of calyculus 6–15, 4–9 mm long; phyllaries 10–21, lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, 5–10 mm long, glabrous except for slightly bearded apex.. Ray florets 8–13, yellow, corolla tube 4–5.5 mm long, glandular-hairy, rays 11–13 mm long, 2.5–3.5 mm wide, 4–5-veined; disc florets yellow, corolla 7–8.5 mm long, tube gradually expanded above the middle, glabrous, lobes 1–1.5 mm long.. Achenes 4.5–5 mm long, blackish, sparsely shortly hairy, many-ribbed; pappus 6.5–8 mm long, white.
