Perennial herb with creeping woody rhizome and sometimes with the main stem prostrate, and ascending branching leafy flowering stems 20–150 cm high; stems pale to bright green, sparsely glandular-pubescent.. Leaves crowded in terminal rosettes, with smaller ones on the inflorescence, somewhat succulent, sticky, oblanceolate-linear, oblanceolate, oblong or narrowly lanceolate, 6.5–26 cm long, 0.6–3 cm wide, tapered into a slightly expanded subauriculate semi-amplexicaul base, margins minutely to strongly sinuate-dentate or sinuate-serrate, revolute, apex subacute to rounded, minutely apiculate, bright green with paler midrib, densely glandular-pubescent above, glandular and minutely ciliate on the margins, glandular-pubescent and sometimes also slightly arachnoid beneath; stem leaves few, sessile, semi-amplexicaul, auriculate.. Capitula discoid, scented with a sweet or musky odour, erect, 3–many in lax terminal cymose corymbs or panicles; stalks of the individual capitula glandular; involucre suburceolate-campanulate, cylindrical in lower 2/3, very slightly contracted just below, then expanded at, the apex, 9–14 mm long, 4–7 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 3–6, lax, lanceolate to broadly so, 3–6 mm long, pale green with dark tips, glandular; phyllaries 10–20, green, brown and bearded at the apex, 8–12 mm long, glandular, rarely also sparsely arachnoid, with hyaline margins and paler main veins translucent towards the apex..
