Characteristics

Perennial herb sending up one or several simple erect stems to c. 1.5 m from the horizontal woody stock, stems up to 6 mm diam. in the lower part, woody and soon leafless there, closely leafy above, glandular pubescent to nearly glabrous. Leaves up to c. 8 x 6 cm, decreasing in size upwards, nearly sessile to shortly petioled, ovate or elliptic, apex acute, mucronate, base rounded to subcordate, margins thickened, sharply and sometimes coarsely serrate, side veins 6-9 each side, both surfaces cobwebby at first, wool persisting in white wisps particularly on the midvein and petiole. Heads radiate, many on cobwebby, sparsely bracteate peduncles arranged in a flat-topped corymbose panicle. Involucre campanulate, bracts 10-12, 4-4.5 mm long, shorter than the disc, keeled with a median resinous nerve, calyculus bracts few, all lightly cobwebby particularly at the base. Rays 5, spreading, disc flowers deeply lobed, each lobe with a median orange resinous line, both rays and disc creamy white or palest yellow. Achenes 2.5 mm long, cylindric, ribbed, white-pilose.
