Perennial herb, 50–90 cm high; crown of rootstock shortly woolly; stems 1–2, erect, leafy, glabrous except at the nodes.. Leaves slightly glaucous, lower stem leaves smaller than the median; median and upper stem leaves sessile, oblong or lanceolate-elliptic, 3–17 cm long, 0.6–5 cm wide, cordate and semi-amplexicaul at the base, margins entire, subentire or remotely minutely denticulate, apex shortly acutely acuminate-apiculate, glabrous.. Capitula discoid, numerous in a copious terminal corymb; stalks of the individual capitula slender, glabrous; involucre cylindrical, 5–6 mm long, 3.5–4 mm in diameter, glabrous; bracts of calyculus 1–4, lanceolate, 0.5–2.5 mm long, glabrous; phyllaries 6–9, 4–6 mm long, obtusely tapered and slightly bearded at the apex.. Ray florets 0; disc florets pale yellow to yellow, corolla 5–6.5 mm long, distinctly but gradually expanded in upper half, glabrous, lobes somewhat unequal, with two rather shorter than the other three, 1–2 mm long..
