Perennial herb, 60–65 cm high; stems 1–2, erect, yellow-green tinged dull purple, almost glabrous.. Basal and stem leaves sessile, rather fleshy, green, with fine reddish-purple margins, oblanceolate-linear, 5–26 cm long (including 3.5–10 cm long petioloid base), 0.7–1 cm wide, long-attenuate into a petioloid base, margins dentate, apex obtuse, ± woolly and vinous at very base, otherwise glabrous, held erect with margins folded upwards; stem leaves becoming progressively smaller up the stem and becoming semi-amplexicaul.. Capitula erect, radiate, 2–4 in lax terminal corymb; stalks of the individual capitula slightly arachnoid near apex; involucre broadly cylindrical, 10–12 mm long, 10 mm in diameter, slightly arachnoid-lanate at base; bracts of calyculus 10–12, lanceolate, 5–9.5 mm long, sparsely arachnoid; phyllaries 20–22, tinged dull purple, 8–10.5 mm long, slightly arachnoid or glabrous, bearded at apex.. Ray florets 8–11, bright yellow, corolla tube 5 mm long, sparsely hairy, rays irregular and somewhat reflexed, 17 mm long, 3 mm wide, 8-veined; disc florets paler yellow, with brown anthers, corolla 8 mm long, tube gradually expanded above the middle, glabrous, lobes ovate, 1 mm long.. Achenes 5 mm long, shortly pubescent, many-ribbed; pappus 7.5–8.5 mm long.
