Characteristics

Perennial herb up to c. 60 cm tall, roots narrowly fusiform, rootstock woody, crowned with old fibrous leaf bases, flowering stem solitary, simple below the inflorescence, very lightly cobwebby, hairs eventually clinging in woolly patches, persisting at the crown among the leaf bases, but often obscured by fibres, leafy throughout. Radical leaves up to 40 x 0.4(-0.8) cm, linear, tapering to a long narrow pointed apex, gradually narrowed to a petiole-like base, expanded below, clasping, margins closely and minutely callose-denticulate, sometimes slightly crisped undulate, often rolled under, cauline leaves similar but soon sessile, base often auricled, half-clasping, usually with traces of wool, leaves otherwise glabrous or nearly so. Heads discoid or radiate, up to c. 30 corymbose-paniculately arranged on long very sparsely bracteate peduncles. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 16-20, c. 6 mm long; shorter than the disc, keeled, with a median resinous nerve, calyculus bracts several, short, all thinly woolly especially at the base. Rays when present, 8, spreading, they and the disc bright yellow, corolla lobes of disc flowers with a median resinous line running back down inflated part of corolla. Achenes 3-4 mm long, cylindric (immature), ribbed, villous.
