Characteristics

Woody herb 7–30(–60) cm high, much branched, rhizomatous; stems leafy, arachnoid-pubescent; roots up to 40 cm long.. Leaves sessile, rather succulent, oblong to oblanceolate, 1.2–3.5 cm long, 0.2–1 cm wide, slightly expanded and sometimes auriculate at the base, margins obscurely crenulate-serrulate, apex obtuse, minutely apiculate, densely white arachnoid-tomentose to sparsely arachnoid or glabrous above, densely white arachnoid-tomentose beneath except for base of midrib.. Capitula radiate or discoid, erect, 1–4 together terminal on the branches, sessile or shortly stalked; stalks of the individual capitula swollen, arachnoid-pubescent; involucre 7–9 mm long, 4.5–6 cm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 6–10, lanceolate to oblong, dark-tipped, 3–6 mm long, obtuse to acute, arachnoid especially on margins to densely lanate-tomentose; phyllaries 18–20, sometimes purplish, 7–8.5 mm long, thinly to densely arachnoid or lanate, especially in lower half.. Ray florets absent or 10–14, when present bright yellow, tube 2.5–3 mm long, hairy throughout or at base only, rays 8–12 mm long, 3–4 mm wide, 4–5-veined; disc florets dull yellow, corolla 4.5–6 mm long, expanded above the middle, glabrous, lobes 0.5–1 mm long.. Achenes 2.5 mm long, ribbed, glabrous; pappus 5–6 mm long, white.
