Perennial herb, sometimes ± straggling with erect stems 30–240 cm high, glabrous, sparsely glandular or sparsely setose.. Basal leaves sessile, oblanceolate, 3–7.6 (including 1.5–2.5 cm petioloid base) cm long, 0.7–2 cm wide, narrowed into a slender, basally expanded petioloid base, deeply pinnately lobed with ovate strongly denticulate-lobulate apiculate lobes; stem leaves sessile, oblong-lanceolate to elliptic or oblanceolate, 2–24(–40) cm long, 0.7–6.5(–9) cm wide, ± auriculate at the base, margins sinuate-denticulate, crenulate to remote-dentate or pinnately lobed with ovate lobes, apex obtuse to acute; all leaves glabrous or almost so to ± glandular-pubescent above and especially on veins beneath, sometimes reddish-purple beneath.. Capitula radiate, erect, 1–many in lax to sometimes dense terminal corymbs; stalks of the individual capitula glabrous to thinly glandular or finely pubescent; involucre 7–13 mm long, 3.5–6.5 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 2–8, narrow, lanceolate, 2–10 mm long, setaceous, glabrous, sparsely glandular, or sparsely hairy on margins; phyllaries 11–14(–21), 6–12 mm long, glabrous or sparsely glandular or thinly pubescent, green, sometimes purple-striped.. Ray florets 6–12, yellow, tube 3–6 mm long, glabrous, rays 10–16 x 2–5 mm, 5-veined; disc florets yellow, corolla 6.5–9 mm long, tube expanded above the middle, glabrous, lobes 0.7–1 mm long.. Achenes 4–5 mm long, glabrous; pappus 5–8 mm long (achenes and pappus unknown in vars. major and virungae).
