Characteristics

Rhizomatous perennial herb with 1 or 2 subsimple erect stems to 1.5 m from the crown, stems slender (up to 4 mm diam.) becoming woody below, white-pilose, closely leafy. Lower Leaves up to 7 x 1 cm, lanceolate, apex acuminate, base broad, auricled, half-clasping, margins irregularly callose-dentate or denticulate, slightly rolled under, upper surface minutely hispidulous, lower white-felted, main nerves hispid; upper leaves similar but decreasing rapidly in size and passing into bracts, lanceolate, very long-acuminate, the margins here often strongly revolute. Heads radiate, solitary or up to 6 on long peduncles corymbosely arranged. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 14, c. 12 mm long, about equalling the disc, calyculus bracts few, long, appressed, all hispidulous, with 1-5 parallel, orange-coloured, resinous lines. Rays 13, they and the disc flowers bright yellow, disc flowers with a median orange-coloured resinous line in each corolla lobe running down the corolla tube. Achenes not seen, ovaries 4 mm, fusiform, ribbed, glabrous.
