Characteristics

Herb with annual shoots 20–100 cm high from a perennial rootstock; crown of rootstock woolly; stems erect, leafy, arachnoid to glabrescent.. Basal leaves sessile, elliptic, 20–30 cm long (including 4–14 cm long petioloid base), 4–7.5 cm wide, long-attenuate into a petioloid base, margins sinuate-dentate, apex rounded; lower stem leaves with expanded membraneous exauriculate base; median and upper stem leaves sessile, broadly ovate to lanceolate, elliptic or oblanceolate-oblong, 3–12 cm long, 1–5 cm wide, tapered and exauriculate to an expanded, auriculate and semi-amplexicaul base, margins denticulate, apex shortly acuminate; all leaves thinly arachnoid, glabrescent except for a few hairs on midrib beneath.. Capitula discoid, numerous in copious congested to lax terminal corymbiform clusters; stalks of the individual capitula slender, thinly arachnoid, often glabrescent; involucre cylindrical, 4.5–7.5 mm long, 3–4 mm in diameter; bracts of calyculus 2–6, lanceolate to linear, 2–7 mm long, usually thinly arachnoid and ciliate; phyllaries 8–14, 4.5–7 mm long, thinly arachnoid, glabrescent, bearded at apex.. Ray florets 0; disc florets yellow, corolla 4.7–6.5 mm long, tube rather abruptly expanded in upper third, glabrous, lobes 0.8–1.2 mm long.. Achenes 2–3 mm long, ribbed, hairy; pappus 5–6 mm long, white.
