Characteristics

Shrub or sometimes a small tree 1.5–6 m. high, with puberulous young twigs.. Leaf-blades elliptic or obovate, (3–)5–6(–11.5) cm. long, (1.5–)2.5–4(–6) cm. wide, acute or with an acumen 1–3(–6) mm. long, cuneate or very seldom somewhat rounded at base, puberulous above and pubescent or (not in East Africa) velutinous beneath; 4–6(–8) pairs of main lateral nerves; bacterial nodules mostly 2 or sometimes more, linear, up to 3(–6) cm. long, situated along the basal half of the midrib but sometimes reaching almost the tip of the leaf; petiole (2–)3–8(–10) mm. long, puberulous; stipular sheath 1.5–3 mm. long, puberulous or glabrous, overtopped by 2 awns, 1–2(–3) mm. long, puberulous or glabrous.. Flowers 1–2, sweetly perfumed, subsessile, usually appearing before the leaves; bracteolar cups 3, 1–3 mm. high, each with 2 unequal pairs of awns, puberulous outside.. Calyx-tube glabrous or pubescent; limb ellipsoid and closed in bud, 6–10 mm. high, with the tip apiculate, 1–2 mm. long, splitting into 2–3 lobes when the corolla opens, pubescent outside.. Corolla densely clothed with hairs inside the tube (save for its base); tube 8–14(–16) mm. tall, 1.5–3 mm. in diameter, lobes (7–)8–12 mm. long, 3–5 mm. wide.. Filaments 0.5–1.5(–3) mm. long, glabrous or seldom pilose; anthers 4.5–6 mm. long.. Placenta with 2 basal-lateral immersed ovules; style glabrous or pubescent, 13–20(–24) mm. long, with 2 lobes 1.5–3 mm. long.. Fruit red, ± 1 cm. in diameter.. Seeds ± 6 mm. in diameter.
More
Leaf blades (3)5–11.5 × (1.5)2.5–6.4 cm, elliptic or obovate, obtuse, acute, subacuminate or less often acuminate at the apex, cuneate or sometimes somewhat rounded at the base, stiffly chartaceous, slightly glossy and glabrous or with scattered hairs on upper surface, with scattered hairs or softly pubescent beneath; midrib hairy on both sides, usually drying creamy in colour, prominent beneath; lateral nerves in 4–6(8) main pairs, pubescent beneath; tertiary nerves discolorous but not raised; domatia inconspicuous or occasionally as conspicuous hairy tufts; bacterial nodules mostly 2 or sometimes more, linear, up to 3(6) cm long, situated along the basal half of the midrib but sometimes reaching almost the tip of the leaf; petiole (2)3–8(10) mm long, pubescent; stipules puberulous or pubescent or glabrous, the lobes sheathing at least at base, truncate to triangular, 1.5–3 mm long, each bearing an awn, 1–2(3) mm long.
Flowers sweet-scented, 8(9)-merous, 1–2, usually borne at nodes from which the leaves have fallen, but occasionally in leaf axils; subsessile; bract and bracteoles 3, cupular, 1–3 mm high, each with 2 unequal pairs of awns, pubescent outside.
Calyx tube glabrous or pubescent; limb 6–10 mm long, ellipsoid and closed in bud, with an apiculum 1–2 mm long, splitting into 2–3 lobes when the corolla opens, thin in texture and often translucent, silky pubescent outside.
Corolla tube 8–14(16) mm long, pubescent except for the base, 1.5–3 mm in diameter; lobes (7)8–12 × 3–5 mm, ± truncate and rather irregular at the apex, acuminate but acumen not central in mature lobes.
Pollen presenter sometimes overtopping the anthers by as much as 5 mm, lobes 1.5–3 mm long; placenta with 2 basal lateral immersed ovules.
Shrub or sometimes a small tree 1.5–7 m high; young twigs puberulous or pubescent; older stems covered with dark brown bark.
Filaments 0.5–2(3) mm long, glabrous or seldom pilose; anthers 4.5–6 mm long.
Fruit orange or red, c. 10 mm in diameter, remaining ± sessile.
Style 13–20(24) mm long, glabrous or pubescent.
Seeds c. 6 mm in diameter.
