Characteristics

A sparsely branched, compact, rounded shrub, 0.2-0.3 m tall with flowerheads extending up to 1-2 m, 0.3 m across. Main stem 10-15 mm in diameter. Leaves whorled near ground level below flowerhead stalk, erect, 120-230 mm long, 65-140 mm wide, dissected, with 20-30 tips; stalk 60-75 mm long. Flowerhead cylindrical, 700-1250 mm long, 80-120 mm across, comprising 9-20 headlets of 20-40 flowers each; flowerhead stalk 200-900 mm long. Perianth silvery carmine, with silky hairs, bulbous at base. Involucral bracts ovate, with prominent wings. Style straight, 12-14 mm long. Pollen presenter 1-2 mm long, club-shaped. Flowers: August to October.
